Kickstarter of the Week: For My Brother

Kickstarter Page: For My Brother
Project By: Crooked Tree Studios
Goal: $150,000
End Date: July 22nd, 2014
In a nutshell: “A story of becoming a monster to protect someone you love.”

Boy has it been a while since I delved into the world of people asking for money to make games! I’ve been pretty busy watching the World Cup and being a massive “SJW“, so I’ve not been dipping my pen in the Kickstarter ink as much as I’d like. The last couple of KotWs have been heavily mechanics based, with the likes of SUPERHOT and AdvertCity catching my eye, so I decided to pick something story based this week.

For My Brother is a Megaman and Shadow of the Colossus inspired 2-D platformer about one girl’s fight to protect her brother. Sound good so far? During her journey, she encounters and defeats monstrous bosses, whose form she can then take for her own benefit, Altered Beast/Castlevania-style. What follows is purportedly a twisted tale about sacrificing your own humanity for someone you love.

There was no Alpha build of For My Brother available for me to play, but its trailer is pretty compelling. It teases a little bit of the game’s story, shows of its gorgeous 3-D on 2-D artwork, and even demonstrates how gameplay will change after having absorbed a monster’s powers. As Sister becomes less human in her appearance, she becomes more adept at traversing different types of terrain at greater speed. The game’s infectious Celtic-metal soundtrack also feels like fresh territory for game music, and it blends really well with the Grimm fairy tale tone of For My Brother.

As for your seal of approval? Crooked Tree Studios have already funded Throw Trucks With Your Mind on Kickstarter, which you can now find on Steam Greenlight. Between them, the team has also worked on MMOs like Star Trek OnlineChampions Online and Guild Wars 2, and have built robots with NASA. They’ve even planned out the specifics of their expenditure in a handy chart, so you can be sure they’ll be spending your hard earned cash on animation and art rather than quad bikes and expensive watches.

Although $150,000 is a fairly lofty goal for a small team, For My Brother‘s solid concept and gameplay quirks makes it stand out (in all the good ways) in a PC market awash with DayZ and Surgeon Simulator clones. I’d keep an eye on For My Brother if I were you, even if it’s just for more Celtic Metal.
