The Oculus Rift has not only changed how we think about virtual reality, but gaming as a whole. In a relatively stagnant market, the Oculus Rift has forced adopting developers to learn new techniques and styles. Critically acclaimed, this VR head set is no joke. It isn’t even close to consumer release, but people are still beyond excited for the possibilities that it holds.

We got some hands on time with the Oculus VR headset just outside of Boston in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The event was small scale, and fairly private. Game journalists, software developers, and a few lucky enthusiasts crowded around the nearly half-dozen games available for play. Most games seemed to be nothing more than tech demos, but there were one or two that stood out in the crowd.

The first title to truly catch my eye was Gimbal Cop by Defective Studios. The objective was simple, you are using a space craft to travel through rings, and collect objects. The mechanics work just like they would with any flight simulator, but the Oculus gave it an extra level of depth. The space craft was your own. You could look behind you and inspect its intricacies, or look out the side view mirror and enjoy the view. It was like adding a 3rd analog stick to your controller, but it was a much more natural experience.

This next game blew me away. Robot Roller Derby: Disco Dodgeball was pure silly fun. As soon as I put on the Oculus VR headset, I was transported into a beautiful and crazy world. It became so natural and comfortable to move within the world, like second nature. I soon found myself jumping off ledges, spinning around, and blowing enemy robots into pixilated bits. The Oculus made is so real, despite the ridiculous concept. Seeing a dodgeball flying towards my face was both terrifying and exhilarating. 82 Apps should be applauded for such an amazing creation!

If you are looking to get your hands on the Oculus Rift, you may have to wait until mid- 2014. Oculus VR founder, Palmer Luckey, explained that their goal is to bring the consumer model down to $200 -$300 and get the display up beyond 1080p. To meet those sort of expectations with brand new hardware may take some time. But, considering Oculus VR’s attitude and the support they have garnered, this may be one of the first real Kickstarter success stories.

    Can’t wait for consumer version to drop, as well as related future technology. Once they’e able to track the entire body we’ll finally have fully immersed gaming.
