It is safe to say that Dead Rising 3’s downloadable additions have not really lived up to the core game. After two pieces of DLC had been released, it looked like the series was on a sharp decline, but the newest entry, Chaos Rising, is a minor redemption for the struggling downloadable chapters.

Playing as Hunter, an ex-biker gang member and current Los Perdidos inmate, you escape prison only to find that your gang has been usurped by fellow gang member, Spider. The story serves as an origin to one of the first bosses in the main game, and it does a serviceable job. It isn’t groundbreaking, nor is it altogether interesting, but the character of Hunter is fairly amusing. While not all of his one-liner jokes hit, the ones that do are better than anything the previous two main characters had to say.

Much like the two installments before Chaos Rising, it is pretty sub-par in terms of gameplay. There is nothing exactly unique to do, and the side activities consist of you finding certain motorcycles and navigating them back to a specific area, which feels like a way to pad the game out to an extra hour. The main missions are similar and often boil down to “Go get this” or “Go kill that.” It isn’t a mess or painful to play. It is just lazy.

The extra items found in Chaos Rising lay somewhere in-between those found in Operation Broken Eagle and Fallen Angel. While none match the outrageous feeling of the minigun, they never stoop to the ridiculously boring nature of the food truck. The custom vehicle was particularly enjoyable (a motorcycle that shoots saw blades) but it failed to capture that awe-inspiring, grandiose nature of the RollerHawg from the core game.

Review Overview

Score:

In all actuality, there isn’t a whole lot to say about Chaos Rising. It has a decent premise, mediocre gameplay, and acceptable items. While it did not capture my interest like Broken Eagle, I did not walk away hating its very existence like in Fallen Angel. It merely sits as the “Unforgettable” addition in the series.
