Bejeweled originally debuted as a web-based Flash game over a decade ago (under the title Diamond Mine), and its gameplay has been and still is copied and modified by countless other games. Bejeweled 3, published and developed by PopCap Games, comes out nearly six years after its predecessor, Bejeweled 2, and features the same match-three gameplay as its prequels. Has Pop Cap put together a sequel with familiar Bejeweled gameplay without breaking the magic that made it a hit or are we suffering a retread with altered gameplay *cough* Bejeweled Twist *cough* ?
It is safe to say that Bejeweled 3 is the same as your momma’s Bejeweled from way back when. The same match-three gameplay that has been there since the beginning is here again. Gameplay consists of matching 3 gems in a row that are the same color to clear them out from your board of gems. You move gems left/right and up/down to create groups of three of more gems. If you match four or more of the same color gems, special gems are created. Gameplay is as simple as it comes but it can be difficult to master due to the skill and luck nature of Bejeweled. The skill comes from being able to set up cascading matches, and luck comes from the new gems dropped continuing the work you put in.
Bejeweled 3 starts off with four game modes. Standard has players matching gems until another match cannot be made. Zen mode is an endless mode as matches can always be made, perfect for sharpening your skills and reflexes. Lightning mode is similar to the Blitz modes used in previous titles Bejeweled Twist and Bejeweled Blitz; players have 60 seconds of gameplay and can extend that time by creating combos with the amount of time added depending on the difficulty of the combo. Quest mode consists of 40 puzzles that cover 11 different game styles. These puzzles tend to be short but can be difficult.
Quest mode also contains previews of four hidden game mode that are unlocked by achieving specific feats in the standard game modes. Butterflies has the player trying to destroy colored butterflies before they reach the top of the gems. In Poker mode, players have to think about consecutive matches to create poker hands with the ultimate goal being 5 gem combos for the big points. Diamond Mine has the player making matches destroying the ground below them to dig for treasure and gold. In Ice Storm, players have to make matches in columns to break the rising ice on the columns.
It’s easy to knock Bejeweled 3 for not having changed anything in regards to gameplay and charging over $5.00 for it, but the gameplay is still addicting and damn near impossible to put down. Most players probably haven’t touched a Bejeweled title in years and a new release of tried and true gameplay with some new modes might just be enough to get them playing again.
