Insomniac Games has officially announced its newest title, Song of the Deep, which the studio has been working on secretly since the release of its Xbox One exclusive, Sunset Overdrive, in 2014.
After her fisherman father is lost to the depths of the ocean, it’s up to players to help guide the young Merryn as she ventures below the sea in a homemade submarine to rescue him. In the spirit of other games in the “Metroidvania” genre, players will be able to upgrade their submarine with a mysterious substance known as “Tyne” for new abilities that will help them navigate sunken cities, solve puzzles, and battle mysterious undersea creatures. Don’t expect combat to be of the utmost importance, though; the studio is emphasizing that Song of the Deep focuses heavily on exploration of its vast, underwater landscape.
In an interesting turn of events, the game will be published by retailer GameStop instead of a studio. You can currently pre-order a physical version of the title from GameStop’s website, but have no fear–the game will also be releasing digitally on Xbox Live, PSN, and Steam for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC, respectively. You can expect to get your toes wet and dive into Merryn’s adventure relatively soon, as the game will be releasing this Summer.
